The ultimate way to record details for future reference!
The fundus is the inside of the back of the eyeball. Fundus photography uses a specialised digital camera to photograph the inside of the eye. This technology allows detailed colour digital images of the pigment layer, major blood vessels, optic nerve head and other structures at the back of the eye to be recorded for immediate assessment and future reference.
The digital images can be viewed immediately on a computer screen, if you are interested your optometrist will be happy to show these to you and explain the various structures.
Fundus photographs provide immediate information and a "benchmark" for future reference. This allows "normal" variations to be identified and recorded and abnormal changes to be identified more easily. This assists in the early diagnosis of disease, in monitoring the outcomes of treatment and in patient education with respect to sight threatening changes caused by general health problems.
The images are stored on a computer, the software allows us to check for changes from one visit to the next by comparing the most recent photographs with those taken at previous examinations.
The process is quick, simple and painless, just like having a flash photograph taken.
Fundus photography is charged at around $35 but is not necessarily a procedure required at every routine examination.
